I have a confession to make. I love children’s stories. The endless imagination and creativity, pure innocence, fun characters, and happy ending always bring a big smile to my face. Thanks to my mom, many of my childhood memories revolve around wonderful children’s stories.

Unfortunately, many kids don’t like to read folktales because they think they are OLD and BORING! And typically those stories have old people as the main characters. So how did I become such a bookworm? Believe it or not, it is thanks to the TV.

Growing up, I watched the Nihon Mukashi Banashi series (Old Stories of Japan) every Saturday evening. With the magic of animation and sound, the TV series made the old stories approachable and memorable. I can still remember its opening theme song to this day. The following video is one of the treasured folktales that is perfect for this season.

With its long history, Japan has numerous folktales to be told. If you need any help finding good Japanese folktales, just let me know.
I’d be glad to help.
