Every year, my husband and I spend quite a bit of time trying to decide what to give our mothers for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, we usually use our best gift ideas on their birthdays, and our mothers both have particular tastes that we don’t always understand. We don’t live close enough to know what they might immediately desire as a gift, and they have everything they need; literally, everything. The only thing left for us to do is to look for some gift ideas online. So presented here are the top three Mother’s day gift ideas in Japan.

Number One: Carnation Flowers.
This doesn’t surprise me because, well, we’ve all done that!

Number Two: Flower and Sweets Set.
Come to think of it, I personally don’t know any mothers who don’t like a good box of sweets. This is definitely Hana (flower) and Dango (Sweets) concept, not Hana yori Dango concept. In fact, these gift sets are so popular that many flowers shops now carry their own sweets selections. Typical Mother’s day sweets are Kasutera (Pound cake), baumkuchen, cookies, or wagashi.

Number Three: Fruit sets, champagnes, or accessories. While there is no clear winner for number three, I think you get the idea: typical Mother’s Day gifts bear an amazing resemblance to things you might get someone you’re dating but with whom you’re not quite ready to settle down.

Mother’s day is just around the corner and while those chocolate carnation box sets are easy to come by, we could get her something she really wants: our love. My mother always told me that it didn’t really matter what I got her, as long as I loved her that was good enough for her.
